How many things can you do with an old sweater? I managed to make a bunch of cute oversized sweater ornaments and a beautiful gift bag as well! In my family, we have a tradition that comes from my ancestors in Australia. Instead of having wrapped Christmas gifts from Santa, we use large Santa Sacks and put all of the presents in there! Of course, we wrap our family presents that are under the tree. This sweater gift bag could be used for one large, special gift or a bunch of smaller gifts or just reuse it each year to wrap any gift in. I love such an easy, quick project that adds a great impact to my Christmas display!

Supplies to Make Sweater Gift Bag

  • old sweater
  • glue gun
  • scissors
  • ribbon
  • trim, greenery, and decor

How to turn an old sweater into a Christmas gift bag.

Step 1: I purchased this sweater at the thrift store. The sweater arms were cut off and used for these large ornaments. Since I mainly used the sleeves of the sweater to make my ornaments, I used the entire torso of the sweater to make this gift bag. If there is any excess fabric from the sleeves, cut it off. The bottom of the sweater will become the top of the bag.

Step 2: Since my sweater gift bag was for display purposes, I used my hot glue gun to keep it all together. The bottom of the sweater will be the top of the bag. Turn the sweater inside out with right sides together. Basically, you need to hot glue or sew the arm holes and the neck hole. If you wanted to make it more durable and to last longer, I would definitely sew around the edges with your sewing machine. This bag will be reused every Christmas season in our home.

Step 3: Use ribbon to tie the bag closed at the top. Add any trim or decorations to make the bag look Christmasy and fun!

This is a very simple craft that takes extremely little time to make. What a great way to recycle that extra sweater fabric! Whether you use it as display or to put presents in, it will look so festive under your Christmas tree!

The sweater gift bag looks so warm and cozy under the tree. This Christmas tree is my “Santa’s Cabin In The Wood” theme tree.
