Family movie night is an easy night to plan and can be a fun tradition to start for your family – even teens can get into a family movie night. It is a great way to bond with your kids and start a new tradition. Make it a monthly or weekly event or even a birthday party theme.
Tips for a successful movie night:
- Print out darling invites for each member of your family. Set a time and date.
- Print the popcorn container boxes (shown above). Have your kids help assemble – most kids enjoy crafting and helping to create. A family movie night will not be complete without serving popcorn. I’ve had this simple stove-top popcorn maker for years – we LOVE it!!
- Pillows, blankets, and bean bag chairs all help to make it a comfy movie night
- Let everyone know ahead of time that there will be an intermission. This gives everyone a chance for a potty break, and get snacks and drinks.
- Consider serving themed food such as….
Licorice wands for a Harry Potter theme. Penguin cupcakes for a Madagascar theme, Rice Krispie treats for a Disney Cars movie, and many more ideas. No need to go all out and stress yourself – but serving one food theme item can help make great memories of your movie nights.
Since there usually isn’t much interaction during a movie, it’s important to take the opportunity to discuss and review the movie after it’s over. Maybe your family can give it a rating on a scale of 1-10 or a thumbs up or thumbs down. How about any lessons learned from the movie?

Hey Toni!
Such a cute idea! ๐ We have movie night around here a lot and this would be so cute to add to it!
I'm also going to be having my son a 10th bday party soon, and thought I might incorporate this if we have a boys sleep over.

We bought some old fashioned looking plastic pop corn buckets at one of the dollar type stores. I love them since they are reusable, and don't risk grease seeping through and possible onto wherever children may leave them.
I've also found on americanprom.com some seriously cute movie night themed things. They have the lowest prices I have found for tins looking like film reel canisters and clapboards. ๐

I do a movie night with friends every now and again. We always argued about what people wanted to watch so we ended up buying a dry erase spinning wheel and writing down different choices. It actually prevented a lot of arguments, but every now and again someone tries to cheat the wheel. They always get caught and loose their rights for the next movie night.
