Making Colorful Crayons

Hi, I’m Debbie from Party Patisserie, here to show you an easy rainy day (or sunny day) activity to make with your kids. Making Colorful Crayons is a perfect “mom and me” activity, and fun when friends come over, too.

I’ve always loved making crayons with the kiddos for a few reasons: 1) we always have the supplies on hand, and 2) kids are always so excited to see how the crayons go from a solid to a liquid and back to a solid in a different shape. (Great science lesson in there, also.)

Crayons (I think Crayola work the best)

Silicone forms–any shape you like

Cookie sheet

1) Choose your colors, then unwrap the crayons.

2) Divide into color families …

… and break into pieces.

3) Place the pieces into the forms and put on a cookie sheet (it’s just easier to handle this way, and if you over -fill, the wax will land on the cookie sheet, not your oven). We used various shades of the same color to give the crayons depth and interest. You can make them solid colors by using a few of the same color crayons to fill the mold.

4) Place in a 250-degree oven for 8 to 10 minutes until the crayons are completely melted. (Watch carefully as oven temperatures are different.)

5) Speed up the process by placing the forms in the freezer for about 5 minutes after you take them out of the oven to set up and cool off. Once they’re set, just pop them out of the molds. Voila!

Kids are always amazed when they see the various colors in each crayon. They love the shapes, too!

Be creative with your colors and watch their eyes light up when they see the colors they’ve created.

It’s fun to spell out words, too.

Now, give them paper and let their creativity flow!
