Christmas Neighbor Gifts for kids to make! I shared this tutorial over at U-Create last week and wanted to share the details with you. Our family has given homemade gifts to our friends, neighbors, teachers, Seminary & YW/YM leaders, etc for as long as I can remember. This post is about how to take a plain oven mitt from the dollar store and turn it into a darling, “You are deer-ly appreciated gift”. This is a super easy project to make with your kids.
SUPPLIES:
- 1 tan oven mitt (purchased at the dollar store)
- โ yard of flannel in red, black, cream and brown (this is the minimum the fabric store would let me purchase, you only need scraps)
- โ yard Pellon Wonder-Under Iron-on fusible webbing
- Free “deer” printables
Sizing template: Right click and save to computer for sizing. There are two sizes – one for the oven mitt and one for a Deer paper bag (not shown). Tip: when you print this image from your computer, be sure to “print actual size” or choose 4×6 photo.
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1: Iron Wonder-Under to wrong side of fabric or in this case flannel (there really isn’t a wrong side to flannel). Read the Wonder-Under guidelines for detailed instructions
Step 2: Use the template guide (above) to cut out the various oval/circle shapes needed from each colored flannel.
Step 3: Cut two brown flannel rectangles 2.5 in. wide by 5.5 in. tall. Fold the flannel in half lengthwise and draw the antler outline on the back. Cut out.
Step 4: Peel off paper backing from all the flannel pieces. Place fusible web side down and lay on top of oven mitt. Line up the eyes, nose and antlers to make sure it’s in the exact place needed.
Step 5: Use a pressing cloth and iron according to directions on Wonder-Under label.

Voila!! You have a darling, simple gift that is under $2.
For that special friend or teacher, what about adding a frozen cookie dough package inside the oven mitt? This has been a favorite homemade Christmas gift that we have given out over the years. An oven mitt+ cookie dough = a perfect combination!
