Supplies for Easy Basketball Snack Cakes Made With Ding Dongs:
–Ding Dongs Hostess Cakes
-Pre-made orange frosting or white frosting (add orange food coloring) or orange candy melts.
Either the frosting or the candy melts will work. I didn’t have much of a preference of which one I used. It depends on what is easier for you to use or what you already have in the pantry or can get easily!
–Brown or black decorating icing in a tube.
STEP ONE:
Unwrap snack cakes and put them on some sort of wire cooling rack and place bowl underneath cakes to catch the extra frosting or melted candy.
STEP TWO:
If using frosting, simply take the frosting container and heat it up in the microwave for about ten seconds (or until liquid enough to pour)
If using candy melts, melt for 30 second increments and stir. After 1 minute put at 50% power until liquid enough to pour. Do not add any water or liquid. Be careful not to over heat or burn. When pouring over Ding Dongs make sure it is not to hot.
STEP THREE:
Take a large spoon and pour the candy or frosting over the snack cakes being careful to cover the sides as well as the top. You can also take a knife after to smooth off the surface. Let the frosting cool and set for an hour or so. The candy melts will take about 20-30 minutes to set depending on room temperature. You can always put in the fridge to help get it set-up quicker. The lighter colored orange cakes are shown with the candy melts. The darker orange is the frosting.
STEP FOUR:
Use a spatula or knife to transfer the cakes to a piece of wax paper and get ready to draw the lines of the basketball. Take your tube of decorating frosting and cut the tip so that your desired width of frosting comes out. Then heat up that tube for a few seconds so that its even easier to apply. Then simply draw the straight and curved lines of the basketball on the mini cake. Let frosting sit until hardened and you are good to go!
Great fun to have in the kitchen with your kiddos! Let them have at it and sit back and enjoy some yum!!
