Backyard Movie Night Based On Your Favorite Book

How to host a backyard movie night based on your favorite book! First up what is one of your favorite books that have been made into a movie and others would really enjoy? I have read several books that have been made into movies:  Same Kind of Different as Me, Me Before You, The Lovely Bones, The Hunger Games, The Help, Holes, and the Harry Potter series and many more. There are many different varieties of movies – remember your audience and who will be watching. For more tips, see my blog post on hosting a movie night.

The Guernsey Literary Potato Peel Pie Society Backyard Movie Night

A couple of summers ago, I hosted a backyard movie night when The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie movie was on Netflix. We pulled out our big screen perfect for the backyard. I invited some girlfriends, decorated around the movie theme, and served some pie.

More about the book and movie…
The island of Guernsey is one of the British Channel Islands (off the coast of France) that was German-occupied during WWII. One of my top 10 favorite books is, “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” which is a historical novel that was published in 2008. You can find the movie here.

The book is set in 1946. An author becomes pen pals with some residents of Guernsey in the aftermath of World War II. She decides to visit the island and write about their experiences of being under Nazi rule during the war. The book is an epistolary novel, composed of letters written from one character to another.

I really love this book! We happened to be visiting Guernsey back in 2018 when the movie, “Guernsey” came out which was based on the book. In the US, the movie wasn’t shown in theaters because Netflix purchased the rights to it.

Check out all my pictures of my party!

A quote from the book!

Backyard Movie Night Based On Your Favorite Book

The book title is based on a pie made out of potato peels (that is what they had to make “pie” had during the war). I decided to serve yummy pie instead of potato peel pie.

Rolling pins, potatoes, books, gingham, polka dots, movie quotes make for a bit of fun movie decor.  A 8 5 A 9 3 A 10 3

I printed up a copies of actual newspaper clippings and also postcards sent through the Red Cross regarding Guernsey during the war.A 11 3 A 12 3

Apple orchards dot the island. Apple-growing and cider-making play an important part of the island.A 13 2

Letters in the mailbox and a typewriter play a part in the book and movie. When decorating for a movie night figure out what decor can you use to decorate with. Also there is a pig that is part of the A 14 1  A 16 1 A 17 1

I asked everyone to bring a blankie and a chair. Such a great movie and perfect weather for A 18 1Funny story. My husband isn’t much into chick flicks (most aren’t LOL). I told him that we were going to see the movie, Guernsey, in the theater while we were visiting Guernsey Island. He was fine with it – knowing it is one of my favorite books! We went to the theater – smallest theater we’ve ever been to. There might have been 50 seats in the theater and I swear I remember them as just regular chairs placed in a room. We are spoilt here in the bigger cities. I had read this book 3 times before seeing the movie and I was completed captivated!! My husband didn’t know much about this movie and several times during it he leans over and says, “wow, this movie is really good!” I had a good chuckle each time!!

I hope you like my backyard movie night based on one of my favorite books!
