Halloween is a few weeks away, but right now is the time to start thinking about costumes! Kids and adults alike love to dress up as their favorite superheroes, but there are plenty of heroes in our everyday lives that we can get inspiration from. There are so many people working every day and make huge sacrifices in order to make our lives better, and Halloween is a great time to remember this.

When I think of real heroes, one of the first things I think of are firemen. They work hard hours and risk their lives daily and are definitely heroes that we can look up to. I love this DIY raincoat fireman costume from Small + Friendly.

Of course, every firefighter needs his air tank! This is a super cute and easy way to achieve that. Using some empty soda bottles and a little creativity, you can make this accessory to go with any fireman themed costume! Go here to find the simple instructions!

Another one of our everyday heroes are the members of law enforcement. Policemen willingly put themselves on the front line of danger for us, and their recognizable uniforms are part of the job. Thankfully, creating one doesn’t have to be as dangerous, as seen with this great no-sew, last minute, Policeman costume!

A special part of the police force is the K-9 unit. Brave dogs are definitely real life heroes as well. This awesome K-9 team costume is something you can do with your own pooch to fight crime all Halloween long! Get all the step-by-step instructions for your dog here.

How adorable is this costume of a soldier in a tank? The Armed Forces leave their families and homes behind in order to fight for and defend their entire country, and that makes them heroes in anyone’s book. Get different ideas about the basics of how to achieve this costume here! Try it out for yourself!

Another branch of the Armed Forces is the Air Force! Pilots are heroes in general since they do everything in their power to get people to their destinations safely, but members of the Air Force have a very dangerous job that involves incredible skill and bravery. These retro-style pilot costumes are absolutely adorable, and you can get the pattern  and instructions to make it yourself!

Of course, we can’t forget the heroes of the Navy! Wearing navy pants and a striped topped is perfectly nautical, so all you need to top off the costume is the perfect sailor hat – or “dixie cup,” as they’re nicknamed. You can find a full tutorial on how you make your own, here!

Some of the biggest real life heroes are found in the medical field. Doctors dedicate their whole life to saving others, and have to deal with situations that many of us can’t imagine. It’s an admirable job that kids dream about doing, and that makes it a great subject for a costume. This easy one is made from an old men’s dress shirt, and it couldn’t be any more adorable!

Right alongside the doctors, there are the nurses of the world. They are the front lines of any medical facility and deal with the most upset people and also see some of the worst things imaginable. Nurses work hard hours and don’t get enough credit for all they do! This oh-so sweet costume has a vintage feel that is perfect Halloween! This image is shared from SewDelicious.com.au/. Last, but definitely not least, we have teachers. Can you think of anyone who embodies the word “hero” any better? Teachers work hard year after year and deal with every sort of problem you can imagine. They get more critique than praise, but its those hardworking teachers that have made the biggest difference in all our lives. And who is more iconic in the world of teaching than Miss Frizzle from The Magic School Bus? She’s iconic, and you can all the instructions for making a fantastic Miss Frizzle costume by clicking here!

There are heroes all around us, not just in the comic books. In the end, anybody can be a hero to the right person. Hopefully you can get some inspiration from these ideas and create your own perfect real life hero costume!

What are some other real life hero costume ideas you can think of? Who are some of the heroes in your life?

If you don’t have time for DIY, here are some fun costumes all ready for you to buy!
