Welcome to Summer Camp!! This is our first day of 50+ bloggers who will be sharing awesome ideas for crafting with kids this summer. This is our 4th year of Summer Camp. Our blogger friends really come through with complete summer camp AWESOMENESS!! The first craft activity I’m sharing is one of those craft projects that is super easy and your kids will love making and using! It’s a chalkboard town fun summer activity with kids. This cute little town is made from recycled containers. Strips were cut from craft foam to create roadways.
I collected empty (juice, milk) containers and gave them a good rinsing. All different sizes and shapes can work. There are many containers that we can reuse and give new life.
Chalkboard Town Supplies:
- juice, milk containers (empty)
- Acrylic Paint, 2-Ounce this can be purchased at any craft store for usually $1.50 or less. I chose bright colors.
- non-sanded grout
- foam paint brush
- White Primer Spray – optional
- craft foam – optional
Chalkboard Town Steps:
Step 1 :: Gather supplies. Make sure the containers have been rinsed and dried.
Step 2 :: OPTIONAL: If you would like to spray primer the containers it will make them last longer with the chalk paint. But you don’t need too. I sprayed the orange juice 1/2 gallon container with primer. The paint was showing through on this one so I decided to prime it.
Step 3 :: Make the chalkboard paint by mixing 1/2 teaspoon of non-sanded grout with 1 oz of each color of acrylic paint.
Step 4 :: Use a foam brush to paint the containers front, sides and top using the chalkboard paint. Let dry. Repaint 2-3 coats depending on need.
Step 5 :: Once paint is completely dry, draw on the containers with chalk creating a little town.
Step 6 :: Cut strips from the craft foam to create roadways. I used green foam you could certainly use black to make more of a “road” look but I was going for bright cheerful colors. Use chalk to draw lines.
It took about an hour to paint and create this chalkboard town.
