Design Dazzler Artist of the Month March 2009 Fanciful Walls Katy HardeayFancifulwalls.comThis mural was painted for the arrival of new baby girl Alaina. Her mom, Michelle, wanted the room to feel like a princess’ castle, with French landscape and details. She wanted the artwork in the nursery to complement the faux walls and stonework inside and outside the home. Alaina’s daddy really liked the idea of a sky on the ceiling. To pull those elements together, we decided to create the look of a stone-walled courtyard of a castle with a wrought-iron gate leading to a garden. The door to the room is painted to look like old wood with iron hinges. Outside the faux window, the view of a neighboring castle adds to the princess theme. Michelle wrote the story which I painted on a hanging scroll with a faux iron rod with fleur de lis finials. The fleur de lis (symbol of France) can also be seen in the iron gate and the hand-painted furniture. Little details like the story book on the window ledge and the bird on the gate add some fun. Alaina’s mommy enjoyed decorating the room when the painting was finished, to complete this beautiful princess-themed nursery.
This month marks my 15th year of painting murals as Fanciful Walls! I studied art and received my bachelor’s degree in Fine Art at Sacramento State University, CA. While I enjoy painting a variety of themes, both residential and commercial, my favorite projects involve children’s rooms and nurseries. I love to transform a room so it feels like walking into a storybook. I service the Sacramento and surrounding areas of Northern California.
