Neutral Baby Nursery
Hayden Norwood

Since we do not know the sex of the baby we chose to create a neutral palette in the baby room.  We chose to use black and cream to create our palette.  An antique dresser was given new life with a fresh coat of paint.  The bookcase and dresser were painted a neutral color to blend in and keep the space open.  Our punch of color was in the black crib.  The idea for the nursery was to create a room that was soft, calm, and inviting.  I wanted to create a space that was free of bold and gender specific themes.  The color palette is made up of soft creams punched with touches of black in the crib, picture frames, and window coverings.  The silhouette of the tree, in a shade darker than the wall color, adds interest without being too bold.  I created the tree using an overhead projector, my transparency of the tree I had drawn, and a pencil.  Once the tree was drawn on the wall, I used a small art brush to paint the tree on with.   The tree can be printed, made into a transparency, and used in your own design.  The paint colors are from Ace Hardware.  Warm Scones for the wall color, a custom mix of Warm Scones and Canvas Tent for the tree, and Timothy Seed for the dresser and bookshelf.  The frames of the letters and the round table were silver-leafed (this can be bought at your local craft store).  The designed letters were easy to create with thin, wood letters; which were covered with scrapbook paper by using spray adhesive.  Bedding from Pottery Barn Kids Organic Collection, dresser was an antique that was painted out, chair was my grandmothers and was recovered for the room in the creamy white, and the lamp was an existing lamp that I added leaves to (made from foam board) and then painted to match the colors in the room.

I have always had a love for design.  I started out as an elementary art teacher, and within the past 1 ½ years I have graduated from school as an Interior Designer.  I currently work for a firm in Dallas/Fort Worth called The ARTEC Group, Inc.  I love designing children’s rooms and nurseries.  I find them to be fun to dream up and design!  I enjoy using interesting palettes and fabrics to create a design that fits the personality of the parents and children.  I find that it’s fun to create these spaces to be the unexpected instead of the usual things that are seen in children’s and babies designs.
