Home Depot Holiday Gift Wrap Challenge

Finding fun, festive ways to wrap gifts for my loved ones is a great way to get ready for the holidays!  I especially love using items that you wouldn’t traditionally use for gift wrap and making beautiful and unique gift wrapped treasures for my family and friends.

Home Depot asked me if I would be interested in a challenge. “Sure”, I said. Not knowing exactly what I would be doing. You’ll never guess what they asked me to do??

The challenge? Create holiday gift wrap for presents using EVERYTHING from Home Depot. Hmmm…sounds like a challenge!

So I headed to Home Depot and tried to figure out a different way to create great gift wrap.  As a DIYer, I am a regular at Home Depot.  Even though that’s not the first place I would think to go for gift wrap, every part of the gift wrap used under this Christmas tree is from Home Depot! So my favorite gifts are made with the roofing paper and spackling paste.

For this tutorial, I am going to focus on how I made the gift wrap that says, “Merry Christmas”. (Don’t worry, I’ve already shared a tutorial for the adorable Santa Sacks made from Home Depot curtains nestled under the tree!)

Supplies Needed:

  • asphalt sheathing paper –  (Home Depot roofing section) It is awesome- just about $10 for a very LARGE roll. I am definitely going to use this for many projects
  • spackling paste
  • red duct tape
  • painting guide – I used this as a “squeegee” for the spackling (found in the paint section)
  • stencil (I cut mine out with my Cricut, you can do the same or make your own! I found the Contact adhesive shelf liner across from the curtains.
  • hot glue gun
  • scissors

Step 1: First, wrap up your gift with the asphalt sheathing. I used my hot glue gun rather than tape, because the asphalt sheathing is thicker than normal paper.

Step 2: Make a stencil on your Cricut (or create your own, free-hand!). Make sure to use a thick sheet of vinyl, plastic, or contact paper.

Step 3: Grab your stencil, paint guide, and spackling paste. Make sure the stencil is secure, perhaps holding it tightly or using painters tape.

Step 4: Use the paint guide to smooth out the spackling paste over the stencil. Make sure you completely cover all the spaces in the stencil, and be careful not to go over the edge of the stencil.

Step 5: Scrape off the spackling paste. Make sure it is totally smooth. If you see spots, you can decide if you like the worn look, or you can do another layer of spackle to cover the spots. Let dry. This stuff is so awesome. It doesn’t flake and it dries quickly.

I love the look of this “Merry Christmas” on the gift wrap! It is so clean and simple, yet beautiful. Now, onto making the duct tape bow!

Duct Tape Christmas Bow

Step 1: First, long strips of duct tape. You want 2 strips of 3 different lengths- 6 strips total. Match up each of the different lengths, and tape them together. You should have 3 strips of duct tape that do not have any sticky sides showing. Cut off the end of the longest strip so that it is the same length as one of the other strips. You will use the small strip to make the center of the bow.

Step 2: Take the two strips of the same length and create the loops of a bow on each by bringing the ends into the middle. Secure the middle of the bow by taking the ends of the duct tape together. Secure the small loop in the middle with a dab of hot glue.

Step 3: Once you have the loops of the bow completed, take the last strip of tape and cut out triangles in the bottom to create a pointed finish. After you have cut the ends, fold the tape as pictured above. Finally, glue the tails under the loops with a dab of hot glue gun.

Step 4: Your beautiful duct tape bow is complete! Simply attach it to your wrapped gift with a dab from your hot glue gun. Voila! Your present is ready to go under the tree.

These photos show only a few of the limitless possibilities in using materials from Home Depot to make beautiful gift wrap options. I used red curtains for the fabric gift bags, the asphalt sheathing for gift tags, burlap ribbon from the garden section, and an empty paint can used as gift can!

I also used contact paper for the reindeer and Santa on the bags, as well as various odds and ends from the garden section of Home Depot. I love the beauty of unique gift wrapping! Below is a close-up of the great Santa Sack from the tutorial I shared earlier.

I hope this post inspires you to do something creative and unique this holiday season! Finding something to repurpose is as easy as walking around Home Depot and as fun creating a unique, beautiful gift wrap. Happy wrapping!

Thank you Home Depot for providing me with a gift card and the opportunity to wrap outside the box! All opinions and ideas are my own.
